End Processing

SORTING THE BOOKS

1. Retrieve cart of newly-catalogued books.

2. Separate books into categories:

Rushes, Holds and NotifiesBooks by departmentNew General Collection booksRemarks - separate these by departmentThose needing other preservation treatment (scores, items with barcodes affixed to a flag).

3. Priority Processing:

Process and deliver RUSHES, HOLDS, and NOTIFIES firstProcess new books nextProcess remarks next


Use the appropriate instructions below for end-processing items in hand:  


New books:

Books are to be marked (side stamp, inside stamp or plate [inside front cover] and tattle tape/security strip)DVDs/CDs that come with a book are labeled, given a security strip and placed in a secure pocket [opening towards the text block].Books that come with extra material require the label “This book contains accompanying material” placed under the barcode on the front cover of the book.Using the labeling machine, scan barcode for call number, and check for accuracy [see printing spine labels]. Attach the call number to the lower 1/3 of the spine or the upper left-hand corner of the cover.Problem books (with a note) are returned to Kate DeVoe.Books are sorted for deliveryAll Bird new books (i.e. books from the CURRENT YEAR), unless an exception, are dropped off in Room 210 (2nd Floor), on new book cart under sign marked "New Books".Before delivering, using Pick and Scan, remove the “In Process” status is removed from Bird booksIn Voyager Cataloging, open File (upper left) and click on Pick and ScanCheck Clear all box under Item statusClick Items tabClick in Barcode areaScan barcode and check the screen for accuracyWhen finished click Close.


Books needing preservation treatment (scores, repairs, stiffens)

Using the labeling machines, scan the barcode, check for accuracyClip spine label to flag with barcode. Do not affix the call number label.Using Pick and Scan, add bird,pres temp location.Take items to Preservation (Basement)


REMARKS (coming from circulation or from preservation – i.e. repaired books, pambinds, etc)

Using the labeling machine, scan the barcode for call number, and check for accuracy. Attach the call number to the lower 1/3 of the spine or the upper left-hand corner of the cover.General Collection books will go onto a cart and delivered to the 1st floor shelving room, with the note “To be sorted”

MARKING EXCEPTIONS

DELIVER TO MAILROOM, BASEMENT BIRD LIBRARY:

BRANCHES: CARNEGIE, GEOL, BELFER, MLK, ARR, SULF, HAWK

Do the following to each branch book:

Side stampInside stamp with appropriate branch stamp (Syracuse University Library for every branch EXCEPT MLK)Insert tattle tape/security strip with the bayonet.Using the labeling machine,Scan the barcode for the call numberCheck for accuracy. If there are any inaccuracies then put a note into the book and leave with Kate DeVoe.Attach the call number to the lower 1/3 of the spine of the book or the upper left-hand corner of the cover.Take all finished books to the appropriate shelf in the mail room. EXCEPT Rushes/Holds/Notifies, which can be delivered to room 210.


M.L. KING

USE SPECIAL M.L. KING STAMP.Side stamp with special stampInside stamp with special stampInsert tattle tape/security strip with the bayonet.Using the labeling machine,Scan the barcode for the call number [should read M.L. KING]Check for accuracy. If there are any inaccuracies then put a note into the book and leave with Kate DeVoe.Attach the call number to the lower 1/3 of the spine of the book or the upper left hand corner of the cover.All MLK titles MUST be shown to Brian McLaughlin.Deliver finished books to the mail room and place on shelf that says “MLK Library”


DELIVER TO 1ST FLOOR SHELVING ROOM, BIRD LIBRARY:


CHINESE COLLECTION (CSSA call number preface)

Will have gift bookplate attached (or, for paperbacks, clipped to a flag)Side stamp hard bound books.Affix red strip BELOW the call number.Using Pick and Scan, remove the "In Process" status.Deliver finished Chinese books to the 1st floor shelving room

 

DELIVER TO ROOM 100E, 1st Floor, BIRD LIBRARY:

NEW REFERENCE BOOKS

ALL OTHER FLAGGED BOOKS (RUSH, NOTIFY, RESERVES, etc.)

USE BIRD STAMPSide stampInside stamp with Bird stampInsert tattle tape/security strip with bayonet.Using the labeling machineScan the barcode for the call numberCheck for accuracy. If there are any inaccuracies then put a note into the book and leave with Kate DeVoe.Attach the call number to the lower 1/3 of the spine of the book or the upper left hand corner of the cover.Using Pick and Scan, remove the "In Process" status.Discard book jackets.Separate and Deliver :RUSHES/NOTIFIES/HOLDS go to Laura Levin in Room 210. This does NOT include CDs and DVDs. All holds/rushes should be delivered here EXCEPT Architecture Reading Room (ARR) materials.RESERVES and RUSH RESERVES go to Room 210. Please place on truck marked "Reserves Only"


WELLNESS DVDs (have LC call numbers with call number suffix DVD)

DO NOT apply tattle tape to DVD.Scan bar code and place call no. on upper left hand corner of casePick and scan the barcode to remove the "In Process" status.Deliver to Janet in room 210.


BLUE FLAGS/S U PRESS

NYDOCS

The books should already be stamped with “NYDOCS” stamp in Acquisitions, and barcoded in Cataloguing.In End Processing, print out a single horizontal line label. To create single line label, check "Print single horizontal label" in Spine Label program. Place label under the barcode on the top left hand side of the front cover.Insert tattle tape/security strip with bayonet.Do nothing to spine – leave as is.Deliver finished NYDOCS to to Darle Balfoort in the 3rd floor


GSIC Lab DVDs and CDs

Label outside upper left hand corner and spine with call number.Do not put label on CD/DVD.Use only 1 tattle tape strip on CD/DVD.Place the Barcode on the case.Deliver finished DVDs and CDs to Darle Balfoort in the 3rd floor


MICROFILM

Scan bar code and print 2 labelsApply 1 call no. two inches (2”) from the end of the filmCut detail from the other call no. and apply it to the box above the detailPick and scan to remove the "In Process" status.Deliver to Darle Balfoort on the 3rd floor.

 

  DELIVER TO ROOM 458, 4th floor BIRD LIBRARY (MAIN DESK)


CD-ROMS, Music CDs, DVDs, VHS & MICRO FILM


CD-ROMs (have LC call numbers with CD-ROM call number suffix)

Apply tattle tape to CD-ROMScan bar code and place call no. on CD-ROM AND upper left corner of case; do not cover text on CD-ROM with the label.Using Pick and Scan, remove "In Process" status.DELIVERY:If no special instructions, deliver to Main Desk on the 4th floor.May go to other service desk or branch based on special instructions.Ask if uncertain


MUSIC CDs (have accession numbers)

DO NOT apply tattle tape to CDScan bar code and print 1 horizontal label (ex: CD 1234). Affix label to left edge (spine) of CD case (reinforce with tape if necessary).Write the accession number on the top left corner of the insert, or print a label.Apply round "Syracuse University Library" sticker to the CD. Write the accession number ("CD ####") in the blank space on the round sticker.Using Pick and Scan, remove "In Process" status.DELIVERY: to Main Desk, 4th floor


LPs

The LP itself gets small label that says "Syracuse University Library" - print this label with the Zebra printerThe LP jacket gets a spine labelThe LP jacket gets a property stamp


DVDs (those with accession numbers)

Apply tattle tape to DVDScan bar code, print two labels, and place call no. label on DVD and the spine of the DVD case.Using Pick and Scan, remove "In Process" status.DELIVERY: to Main Desk, 4th floor.


VHS

Scan bar code and place call no. on spine of case.Pick and scan the barcode to remove the “In Process” status.Deliver to Main Desk on the 4th floor
