GPA Requirement

In accordance with the Graduate School policies (see “Academic Rules”), the CCR Doctoral Program requires all registered and enrolled graduate students to maintain a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 2.8 each year. A GPA below 2.8 will not automatically result in the cancellation of a student’s matriculation, but it could delay students’ ability to complete the degree on schedule (see “Time to Degree”). It is important to note, however, that while grades are important, they are not the only determinants of success. In addition to grades, employers—search committees at a university, for example—tend to focus more on the range and diversity of coursework and the articulation of a compelling research trajectory. CCR graduate students are therefore encouraged to view their performance holistically, paying attention to their development as researchers, teachers, and members of a vibrant academic community with networks that extend beyond the institution. While receiving a grade lower than an A or A- may be disappointing, it should not be immediately perceived as a negative reflection of your overall ability to succeed in the program. If an issue related to student performance should occur, you are advised to schedule a consultation with the Director of Graduate Studies in the first week of the following semester. This consultation will be an opportunity for constructive dialogue aimed at developing effective solutions for optimal student performance and success.
