Class Cancellations

The Writing Department recognizes that situations do arise and that missing an occasional class may be unavoidable. In those cases, you should make alternative arrangements. For instance, if you know you have to be out of town, you can invite a colleague to take over the class, or hold extra required conferences to compensate, or schedule group work in person or on Blackboard. If you're ill over the short term, see if a colleague can step in. If you must miss more than two classes due to illness, please contact a Department Director so that the Department can make more formal arrangements for class coverage.

If you do have to cancel a class, please notify the Writing Department's office staff at writing@syr.edu so that they will be better prepared to answer student inquiries. Staff cannot leave the office to post notices of canceled classes. It is your responsibility to send students electronic notification if you must cancel class. 

If you have questions about the suitability of canceling classes in particular instances, feel free to ask one of the Department Directors.
