Printing - Windows - College of Law

Please click here for instructions for setting up MacOS computers.

Overview

  • Printer setup for wireless printing on Windows devices consists of three steps:
    • Set a Windows Credential
      • Note that this must be re-done when your NetID password changes
    • Install printer
    • Configure notifications

Set a Windows Credential

  • In your Windows toolbar, click to search, enter "Credential Manager" then click the search result for Credential Manager to open
  • Click Windows Credentials
  • Click Add a Windows Credential
  • Enter information
    • Internet or network address: "printers.ad.syr.edu" without quotes
    • User name: "AD\yournetid" without quotes, noting the direction of the "\" and substituting your own NetID for "yournetid"
    • Password: your normal SU password
  • Click OK

Install Library Printers

  • In your Windows toolbar, click to search, enter "CMD", then select the Command Prompt window
  • Type the command below exactly, noting spaces and the orientation of the "\" characters

    START \\printers.ad.syr.edu\Law-Library1stFloor
  • Installation will take some time; after a minute or so, a status window will pop up to indicate that your computer is attempting to connect and install the printer
  • Setup for the 1st Floor printer is complete.  To add the 2nd Floor printer, enter the command below in the Command Prompt window

    START \\printers.ad.syr.edu\Law-Library2ndFloor
  • After sending a test print job, you may obtain your printed file using the instructions available at Law Library Print Job Release
  • Note that you will need to complete these steps again in the future, after each change to your SU password

Configure Notifications

Your computer may display unhelpful notifications after a printing attempt which indicate that the "printer status is unavailable at this time."  This does not affect your ability to print, and the notification can be ignored.  To disable it entirely:

  • In your Windows toolbar, click to search, enter "Printers & scanners" and press Enter
  • Choose the printer from the list
  • Choose Printing Preferences
  • Choose the Advanced tab
  • Expand the Notification settings
  • Set "Notify for Completed Jobs" and "Notify for Failed, Canceled or Altered Jobs" to Disabled
  • Click OK to apply the settings and exit
