Adding a Printer to Personal Mac

These directions are for personally-owned Macintosh computers connected to the SU network via Ethernet or AirOrangeX. You will need to have installed the correct driver of the corresponding printer before adding the printer in System Preferences.

  1. Open System Settings and select Printers & Scanners from the sidebar.
  2. Select Add Printer.
  3. At the top of Add Printer control + click, right click, or two finger click to bring up the sub-menu and select Customize Toolbar.

  4. A new menu will pop up. Click and drag the Advanced icon to the toolbar. When you see the icon in the toolbar, click Done.

  5. Click on Advanced and select or enter the following information:
    1. Type: Windows printer via spoolss
    2. Device: Another device
    3. URL: Enter smb://printers.ad.syr.edu/ followed by the printer name you are trying to add
    4. Name: The name should match the URL automatically as it is typed
    5. Location: Enter the building and room number where the printer is located (e.g. CST 1-227)
    6. Driver: Select the appropriate driver from the Select software option. Typing the printer model may find the result you are looking for quicker. 
  6. If prompted, click Configure for optional settings, such as trays, duplex, memory, etc.
  7. Once you hit OK, your printer should be installed.

You are now ready to print!

Please note: When you print for the first time to an SU printer , you will be prompted to authenticate. In the name field enter AD\NetID and your NetID password. Faculty and staff print jobs are not hold/release, jobs will print immediately. Students printing to a managed printer via printserver will need to login to printing.syr.edu with their NetID and password to release their print jobs and be charged against their available Papercut funds.Â
