Basic Information within the User Profile

Basic Information, including your full name, cannot be edited.

While you cannot change your name in Blackboard, you can add your preferred name to your MySlice profile. Your preferred name will then appear in Blackboard.

To add a preferred name, log in to mySlice, open the Personal Profile tile, and click Personal Details to update your preferred name.

Users cannot change their primary name; they can only change their preferred name. For official name changes, contact Human Resources (faculty/staff) or the Registrar (students). They require official documentation to process a name change. For assistance, see our FAQs: https://su-jsm.atlassian.net/wiki/x/EAmACQ or call the Help Desk at 315-443-2677.

Editing User Profile Picture

Enter your user profile. Hover over the profile picture circle above your full name at the top of the page and select the edit (pencil) icon.

A sidebar will open showing the same circled silhouette. Under the picture, select the "Upload new profile picture" button.

Your local files will open. Double-click the image file you want to use. The file must be a picture format such as .JPEG, .PNG, or .TIFF.

The uploaded image appears cropped inside the circle. You cannot further edit the picture.

Language Settings

In your user profile's System Settings, the first option is "Language." The system default is "English." To change it, click the current setting.

A sidebar panel opens with a Default Language dropdown. Select your preferred language from the list and click the "Save" button at the bottom of the panel.

Blackboard currently supports these default languages: "English (United States)," "Español (España)," and "中文 (中国)."

Privacy Settings

The second section is "Privacy Settings." By default only your instructor can view your profile. Click the current setting to open a sidebar panel with three options: "Only instructors," "Anyone in my courses," and "Anyone on the platform." Choose the option that matches your privacy preference.

Click the "Save" button at the bottom of the panel to save your changes.

Global Notification Settings

There are three types of Global Notification Settings that you can edit: "Stream notifications," "Email notifications," and "Push notifications."

Stream Notifications

Click Edit "Stream notifications" to change what appears in the Activity Stream on your Blackboard menu. By default, all stream notifications are enabled. A panel will appear with checkboxes for each notification type; check or uncheck them to set your preferences. Click the "Save" button in the bottom-right corner to save and exit.

Email Notifications

When you click the option to edit "Email notifications," you change what information is sent to your inbox about course updates. Unlike Stream notifications, all Email notification types are off by default. A panel will appear showing checkboxes beside each notification type; check or uncheck them to set your preferences.

Above the checkboxes, choose whether to receive a single daily summary email or immediate notifications when course changes occur. Click the "Save" button in the bottom-right corner to save and exit.

Push Notifications

Push notifications appear only for users of the Blackboard Learn mobile app. Editing "Push notifications" changes the information shown on your mobile device.

To receive these notifications, enable Notifications permission for the Blackboard Learn app on your mobile device.

When you edit Push notifications, a panel opens with checkboxes for each notification type. Select or clear boxes to set your preferences. (Due date notifications always appear in the app.) Click the black "Save" button in the bottom-right corner to apply your changes.
