LA - Summer 2024 Conditions of Participation

Commitment

I understand that I must arrive in Los Angeles by Sunday evening, May 19, 2024.

I understand that I must attend the mandatory orientation meeting on Monday, May 20, at 9:30 a.m. at the Syracuse University Dick Clark Los Angeles Facility.

I will not schedule any personal appointments or internship duties during orientation. Should I have an unexpected conflict, I will contact the director or assistant director immediately to discuss.

I will attend the mandatory Welcome Dinner as well as any other various mandatory events during the week.

I will attend all class meetings and arrive on time. I understand perfect attendance is expected of me. If I am unable to attend class due to unforeseen circumstances, I will notify the professor immediately to seek permission to be absent from classand ask how I may make up missed classwork.

I will make every effort to attend events offered by the program throughout the summer.

If I have rsvp’d “yes” to an event, I will honor my commitment to attend.

Conduct

I understand that while I am in Los Angeles, I remain accountable to the Syracuse University Code of Student Conduct and the Office of Community Standards, as well as the Newhouse LA Professional Protocols.

I will act in a professional manner while working at my internship.  This includes being on time, dressing in appropriate attire, being respectful of colleagues and the company workspace.

I will treat the Los Angeles administrators, instructors, alumni, guest speakers, field trip hosts, fellow Los Angeles participants, and my roommate & apartment mates with courtesy and respect.

I will treat conflicts with empathy, flexibility, maturity, and effective verbal communication.

I understand that the program administration can suspend my participation in the summer program if they believe I am a threat to myself or other students in the program, the internship, or the Kapi residential community.  Such suspension or termination is in addition to, and not in lieu of, disciplinary action that may be imposed by Syracuse University’s applicable policies and procedures.

In connection with Covid-19, I understand that I must comply with all policies and procedures dictated by the Newhouse LA program which is also relying on recommendations by the Los Angeles Department of Public Health.

Financial Responsibility

I understand that my bursar account will be charged for Syracuse University published per credit tuition rates, a $1000 program fee, and Kapi Residence base rent housing charges associated with the summer program (if this is requested by the student via a Housing Accommodation Form)

Refunds for tuition and fees will be made in accordance with the current refund policies of Syracuse University, relating to involuntary withdrawals, as stated in Syracuse University’s publication Tuition, Fees, & Related Policies in effect for the corresponding semester.

Should I decide to withdraw from the Newhouse LA program, I must notify the program in writing. Failure to supply written notice with reason for withdrawal will result in Syracuse University continuing to bill me as an enrolled student.

Intent to Register

I intend to register for Newhouse LA summer classes on March 20.

I understand that the summer academic program consists of registering for six (6) credits of classes:

o   Entertainment Industry Practicum (internship) for one (1) credit

o   Selecting either COM 506/509 (Law) or COM 350 (Diversity) three (3) credits

o   Choosing from a selection of offered one (1) and (2) credit electives.

Any deviation from program requirements need approval from the Newhouse LA Program Director.

Internships

Students participating in internships with external companies/organizations must comply with all health and safety rules, including those related to COVID-19 prevention, set by the external companies/organizations. For example, external companies/organizations may have different masking or vaccination rules than the University, including in some instances stricter rules, and students must comply with those rules, in addition to the Syracuse University rules.

Failure to comply with a company/organization’s health and safety rules may prevent a particular placement or result in the loss of a placement.  If you have any questions about requirements for companies/organizations, please let us know.
