LA - Internships

Internships are a central part of the Newhouse LA program. They provide students with real-world experiences and valuable insight into the entertainment industry. Interns learn entry-level skills, become exposed to professional environments, make connections and develop tools that will aid them as young professionals.

How will I get an internship?

Newhouse LA staff members are dedicated to helping every student secure an internship. 

All students are required to have a one-on-one interview with the program director to discuss areas of interest and potential internship opportunities. These appointments will be via zoom (for summer and abroad students) or in-person (for fall/spring students on main campus).

Students are required to submit their resumes to the director before meeting.  All students should visit the Newhouse Career Development Center (CDC) and attend the seminar on résumé and cover letter writing. Students should also review the résumé and cover letter writing resources provided by the CDC, as well as,  How to Organize a Résumé, Résumé Example , Cover Letter Basics and Cover Letter Example.

Students should begin by researching internship opportunities online. Major media companies have formal internship programs with a variety of internships. These positions are very competitive and it is in the best interest of the student to immediately apply for any openings that are of interest.  These opportunities are posted as they become available so it is important to check frequently. Newhouse LA staff will also post current internship opportunities and provide students with information regarding internships based on their expressed area of interest.  Students will receive a job description, an overview of responsibilities and instructions on how to apply. This is not a guarantee of placement or acceptance. Students will be responsible for sending their résumés and cover letters, securing interviews and securing the internship. Students should also research opportunities at companies of interest and utilize personal contacts. 

How do the internship and internship course work (during the fall and spring semesters)?

All Newhouse LA fall/spring semester students are required to intern 18-to-30 hours per week.  You will register for your internship (TRF 475) for a minimum of one credit or maximum of 3 credits through MySlice at your appointed registration time. The Los Angeles Entertainment Industry Practicum is a required component of the program and must be taken in conjunction with your internship. The course is scheduled for Wednesday nights and is taught by program director Robin Howard.

How do the internship and internship course work (during the summer semester)?

All Newhouse LA summer students are required to intern 18-to-35 hours per week. You will register for your internship (TRF 475) for one credit through MySlice at your appointed registration time. The Los Angeles Entertainment Industry Practicum is a required component of the program  and must be taken in conjunction with your internship. The course meets three times during the summer and is taught by program director Robin Howard.
