Admission Requirements and Timeline (History Graduate Program)
OVERVIEW OF DEADLINES-Fall 2025 Admission
Early Fall of Year Prior to Admission: Inquire and have questions answered about the History graduate program.
Mid-Fall of Year Prior to Admission: Begin compiling application materials. International Students: take TOEFL exam.
January 1, 2025: Deadline for receipt of complete application and all supporting materials.
March 15, 2025: Around this time, the History Department sends letters of acceptance or denial to applicants.
TIMELINE FOR APPLYING TO THE GRADUATE PROGRAM-Fall 2025 Admission
Early Fall 2024
- Obtain Information on the Graduate Program from our History Website
- Email Questions to the History Office: history@syr.edu or George Kallander, Graduate Director: glkallan@syr.edu
Mid-Fall 2024
- Contact the Registrar’s Office of each higher educational institution that you attended and have one copy of your official Transcripts sent to Syracuse University.
- Contact three (3) recommenders for confidential Letters of Recommendation
- Recommendation letters should be submitted through the online application. Complete your portion of the online Recommendation Forms and submit email addresses of your recommenders. The online application system will send the forms to your recommenders.
- The completed Recommendation Form from the application packet and letter of recommendation can also be sent to the Graduate Enrollment Management Center in a sealed envelope on which the recommender has signed across the seal.
- Prepare a Personal Statement for the application packet.
- The M.A. applicant should address his/her background, history interests, and reasons for applying to Syracuse.
- The Ph.D. applicant should address the fields of history to be studied, faculty members at Syracuse with whom he/she would like to work, and the applicant’s command of foreign languages appropriate to the fields in which he or she is interested.

Complete online application: Apply to a Graduate Program
The following materials must be submitted to the Graduate Enrollment Management Center (GEMC):
- Official Transcripts
- Letters of Recommendation with Recommendation Forms (3)
- Non-Refundable Application Fee ($75)
- The Application Fee Waiver Request form for Financial Hardship can be found here.
- A Personal Statement (see above for criteria)
- Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Writing Sample (20-30 pages in length)
