Google Workspace Abuse Policy

Google Workspace Abuse Policy

Overview

Files that are identified to be violating Google's terms of service can be restricted from use.   This can happen for a number of different reasons.

When a file is determined by Google to be in violation, an email will be sent to the owner's g.syr.edu Gmail account that will notify them of the action taken and instructions on how to review the restriction and potential actions that can be taken.

There is no admin control of this policy.   This means that Syracuse University Google Workspace admins have no ability to review or take action on behalf of the user.   Admins also have no access to the user's data.

Google Abuse Policies

There are numerous policies under which a file can be flagged.   These policies can apply to any file held within Google Workspace including Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Sites.  Files that are flagged will not be sharable with other users until the abuse policy has been remediated.

Here are the main categories defined by Google:

  • Account Hijacking
  • Account Inactivity
  • Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation
  • Circumvention
  • Dangerous and Illegal Activities
  • Deceptive Practices, Fraud & Scams
  • Harassment, Bullying, and Threats
  • Hate Speech
  • Impersonation and Misrepresentation
  • Malware and Similar Malicious Content
  • Misleading Content
  • Non-Consensual Explicit Imagery (NCEI)
  • Personal and Confidential Information
  • Phishing
  • Regulated Goods and Services
  • Sexually Explicit Material
  • Spam
  • System Interference and Abuse
  • Unauthorized Images of Minors

Please see the linked support documents for more descriptions and the most up to date information.

Terms of Service

These policies are driven by Google Workspace Terms of Service .   All definitions and methods used to determine "unacceptable" content are strictly made by Google and not the Syracuse University Google Workspace application administrators and ITS.
