Minors (GPE and GSS)

The International Relations Program offers two minors, Global Political Economy and Global Security Studies, that are open to students from across the College of Arts and Sciences and all other Schools in the University.

The GPE and GSS minors enrich a student’s major course of study by providing additional opportunities to study global affairs and the dynamics of international economic, political, and military systems. Our current minors are drawn from across the University, and include students from the Newhouse School, Whitman School of Management, Falk College, and the College of Arts & Sciences, in addition to almost every program within the Maxwell School.

Many of our minors choose to further enhance their understanding of global issues by studying abroad or participating in the Maxwell in Washington semester. Minors are also encouraged to join the IR Club and to participate in our Program’s many activities and events.

For more information about either minor, please email IRMinors@syr.edu.

Global Political Economy Minor

The Global Political Economy (GPE) minor focuses on all aspects of globalization and international economics in the contemporary world. As an interdisciplinary program in the social sciences, the GPE minor is designed to help students explore the dimensions and implications of globalization in contemporary international relations.

The minor is administered by the International Relations Program and is open to all Syracuse University students in good academic standing, with the exception of International Relations majors whose topic concentration is International Political Economy, which may not be combined with the GPE minor.

Global Security Studies Minor

As an interdisciplinary program, the GSS minor is designed to help students explore the global, international, national, and human dimensions of security, conflict, and conflict resolution in contemporary international relations using the analytic tools provided in different social science disciplines.

The minor is administered by the International Relations Program and is open to all Syracuse University undergraduate students in good academic standing, with the exception of International Relations majors whose topic concentration is International Security & Diplomacy.
