Booking Spaces for Students

The schedules for classrooms and production spaces in the Shaffer Art Building are public and accessible on the Facilities Hours page here. Students in FMA and taking FMA studio courses may reserve some but not all of our spaces.

Classrooms:

To reserve a classroom, go in person to the front office in Shaffer 102 and speak with the Department of Film and Media Arts office staff. Labs, production spaces, and classrooms in the photo area of the basement are not reservable in this way.

Production Spaces:

The following production spaces are reservable for FMA students and students in FMA studio courses: 018: Ensemble Recording Studio, 025: Green Screen Room, 027: Recording Studio, 036F/G: Photo Shooting Studios, 208: Cinematography Room. The Photo Shooting Studios are open only during lab hours. Reservations are required for all spaces. Production spaces do not have walk-in hours.

To reserve a production space, go to the VPA Cage at least 48 hours before you need the space with a valid SUID. Except for the Photo Shooting Studios, production spaces require swipe access.

Lighting equipment, which includes a camera, tripod, strobe kit, and modifiers, is available for students who have a reservation in the Photo Shooting Studios. The equipment is there and will be provided by a lab monitor upon request. Students who need additional audio equipment for the recording studios can check that equipment out at the cage via normal equipment reservation procedures.

Labs

Our labs are located in the basement of the Shaffer Art Building. Labs are open to Department of Film and Media Arts students or students currently enrolled in a Department of Film and Media Arts studio course. Labs are walk-in. No reservation required. We do not grant swipe access to lab spaces.

As always, check our Blackboard Organization > VPA Equipment Cage for current operating hours, announcements, and policies. If you are unable to access this Blackboard Organization page and are an FMA student or are in an FMA studio class, email vpcage@syr.edu for access.Â
