General Requirements


  1. All repertoire presented for jury examination must be performed from memory.
  2. Students should bring to the examination the same number of copies of repertoire/comment sheets as the number of faculty grading your jury. On these sheets you will list the songs you are prepared to sing for your jury. Repertoire sheets are available in the School of Music Office or from your voice teacher.
  3. No repertoire on the list shall be duplicated from previous juries.
  4. In any semester, a “sung jury” examination will not be required when a degree recital has been given after mid-term.
  5. Note that the term “classical repertory” includes songs and arias from the list of repertoire spanning the Renaissance through to the most recent 21st century. Cross-over and music theater literature (requiring a resonant singing technique) can be substituted for one of the prepared selections, at the teacher’s discretion.
  6. Within the category of "classical" songs and arias required for each semester of voice study is a "new music" requirement (approved April 15, 1997). The following has been approved:
    1. All students are required to play/sing a twentieth or twenty-first century work on at least one jury per year; a different twentieth or twenty-first century compositional style must be represented on each jury.
    2. All performance majors and performance honors students must perform one work composed within their lifetime or by a living composer on one degree recital; or,
    3. Recognizing that collaborations between students often yield significant professional relationships, each performance major and performance honors student may, in lieu of requirement 6b, perform at least one work by a student composer in the School of Music either as part of a solo recital or on a School-sanctioned concert of student composers' works.
    4. There will be no stylistic or technical guidelines governing the choice of new repertoire, other than that stylistic variety will be required on juries, and that new works on degree recitals will have been composed either by a living composer or within the lifetime of the student performing them.
  7. Any student in a Music Degree program only taking 1 credit or a half-hour lesson will be expected to perform from memory any 2 of 3 songs or arias listed on their repertoire sheet; all selections should be from the classical repertory.
  8. The following jury repertoire requirements apply to music majors whose primary instrument is voice, taking 2 applied voice credits or a one-hour lesson. All songs or arias listed are to be performed by memory.

Freshman Year; VOC  115, 116(first and second semesters):

115 - first semester: Sing 2 of 3 art songs or arias prepared and listed on your repertoire sheet; both selections should be from the classical repertory.

116 - second semester Sing 2 of 4 art songs or arias prepared and listed on your repertoire sheet; both selections should be from the classical repertory.

Sophomore Year; VOC 215, 216 (first and second semesters):

215 - first semester Sing 2 of 4 art songs or arias prepared and listed on your repertoire sheet; both selections should be from the classical repertory.


216 - second semester Sing 2 of 5 art songs or arias prepared and listed on your repertoire sheet; all selections should be from the classical repertory. Several languages, including English, should be represented . **Sophomore Performance Majors and Performance Honors candidates who are being evaluated will sing 3 of 5 art songs at this jury .

Junior Year; VOC 315, 316 (first and second semesters):

315 - first semester Sing 2 of 6 art songs or arias prepared and listed on your repertoire sheet; all selections should be from the classical repertory. Several languages, including English, should be represented.


316 - second semester Sing 2 of 6 art songs or arias prepared and listed on your repertoire sheet; all selections should be from the classical repertory. Several languages, including English, should be represented.

Senior Year; VOC 415, 416 (first and second semesters):

415 - first semester Sing 3 of 6 art songs or arias prepared and listed on your repertoire sheet; all selections should be from the classical repertory. Several languages, including English, should be represented.


416 - second semester Sing 3 of 6 art songs or arias prepared and listed on your repertoire sheet; all selections should be from the classical repertory. Several languages, including English, should be represented.

* The Senior Recital should represent a wide variety of languages, genres, periods and styles.

**Sophomore Performance Majors and Performance Honors candidates who are going abroad in the spring semester will be evaluated during the jury at the end of the first semester of sophomore study. Those who do not pass the Sophomore Performance evaluation or who are not awarded Performance Honors at that time may petition to be re - evaluated at the beginning of the following Fall semester

Graduate Students; (VOC 615, 616, 715, 716)

Sing 3 of 7 art songs or arias prepared and listed on your repertoire sheet; all selections should be from the classical repertory. Several languages, including English, should be represented.
