Do I need to complete the placement exam in one attempt?

No, all on-line placement exams can be saved without submitting the exam.  When you return in a subsequent session you may pick up where you left off. 

Note that once you submit the exam by using the  “save and submit” button and confirming the submission, you will not be able to get into the exam again.
