Ultra Course - Course Image and Banner

Adding a Banner to Your Course

If your course does not have an existing banner, and you would like one to add to the aesthetic of your Course page, here are quick steps to add one to your course.

1. Go to your Course page, then on the left hand menu, Details & Actions,  select "Edit display settings" (see image below).

2. The Display Settings menu will appear on the right side of the Course page. Select the picture icon opposite Course Image (see image below).

3. Once you click on the picture icon, the Insert Image dialog box will appear.  You have 2 choices for image selection:

You can select "Upload from Device"; this is where you would use saved images from your laptop or desktop (see image above). You can upload or drag saved images to this area noted in the image above.  If you select the "Upload file" button, you are immediately sent to your device folders. You select the image you need, then select the blue "Open" button. Ensure that your image size is 1200 x 240 pixels (px) or larger.

Also, you can conveniently select "Stock images from Unsplash". These are images that are already created on the platform for users. By default, images that initially show are based on your course title. However, you can use the "Search" box and find specific images you want. Once you click on the image you desire, then  select "Next" at the bottom right of the Insert Image dialog box. Adjust the portion of the image you want to be visible on your banner, then select "Save".

4. Alternative Text or Decorative Image

Regardless of your choice of image, you will be prompted to note if the image is required for accessibility or decorative purposes. If the image is needed for more than decorative purposes you will need to enter alternative text in the "Alternative text" box. If not, check the "Mark the image as decorative" box.

5. Once you have completed step 4, you can select "Save". Your banner should display immediately. If not, please refresh the page. Please note that your course banner image is the same image that is applied to your course card when you view your courses in grid view.

Viewing the Course Image

Courses that have an existing banner image are shown when viewing your course list in grid view. The image appears at the top of each course card, above the course ID and name (see image below). Newly-created courses will be randomly assigned a default course image by the Blackboard system.

Ways to Access Banner for Editing Purposes

1. If you need to change an existing banner image, in grid  view you can  hover your cursor over the image on  your course card then click on the ellipsis menu to show the dropdown list. Select "Edit course image"  to open the display settings.

2.  Alternatively,  on the Course page, you can access the banner from the left hand menu by clicking the "Edit display settings" under Details & Actions (see image below). You can also access your banner by hitting the pen icon on the far upper right on the existing banner (see image below).

Removing Course Banner

Repeat step 1 or 2 in "Ways to Access Banner for Editing Purposes". Under the Display Settings dialog box you will note that the Course Banner is toggled "on". If a course banner is not desirable then toggle to "off" and then click on the "Save" button at the bottom of the dialog box. You also select select the delete button at top right of the Display Settings dialog box.
