What is the pilot private wireless network?

Syracuse University, in partnership with JMA Wireless, has installed a cutting-edge, 5G private wireless network in select residence halls and academic buildings as part of a pilot program that will run at a minimum through the Fall 2022 semester.

What is the goal of the private wireless network?

This wireless network provides improved bandwidth, accelerated speed of connectivity and increased coverage. From completing classwork to gaming to sharing your selfies on your social media channels, the private wireless network will ensure a seamless experience from your phone.

Who else is participating in the pilot program?

This initial pilot program will focus on a group of students from selected residence halls to participate.

Where can I access the private wireless network?

The private wireless network is active in Day, Flint and Shaw residence halls, as well as a small number of academic buildings. If outside the connected area, your phone will seamlessly transition to your normal carrier network or to the Syracuse University WiFi network, AirOrangeX. It will then seamlessly reconnect when you are back in a covered area of campus.

What devices are eligible?

The pilot program is focused on connecting smartphones. We will release more information about adding other devices to the network in the coming weeks.

My device wouldn’t connect with the private wireless network. What should I do?

Technology is changing every day. Not all phones will connect to the new network immediately. We may need to do some additional work with you at a later date. Don’t worry—we’ll ensure you get connected to a network.
