All computers are purchased with available extended warranties from Apple and Dell. In addition, laptop computers must be purchased with accidental damage coverage when available.

Staff

Computers for staff are desktop/laptop Dell PCs with Microsoft Windows as per University standard unless the IT Director and the unit Director approve otherwise.

Faculty

Computers for full-time faculty are desktop/laptop, typically from Apple or Dell. If teaching or research requires specific manufacturer, that manufacturer must be agreed by the IT Director so that the required support can be provided on the purchased computer.

One-year faculty will use a Dell Precision desktop PC as available. One-year faculty who choose to use their own personal computer for University work must do so in compliance with the ITS Security standards and procedures: Security 101

Most University-owned software cannot be installed on personally-owned equipment due to licensing restrictions.

A Special Note on Purchases of Computing/Technology Equipment

All technology purchases underwritten by university funds, regardless of funding source, must be made in consultation with IT staff. IT staff will work with faculty and staff to identify and spec the equipment or software, and will purchase the equipment or software on behalf of faculty or staff. Funding sources include IT startup funds, research funds, internal and external grants, and other university initiatives. Items under this policy include, but are not limited to, computers, tablets, digital projectors, monitors/TV screens, 3d printers, printers, digital fabrication equipment, digital cameras and videocameras, scanners, sound recording equipment, computer peripherals, and software.

Faculty or staff who purchase equipment on their own and submit receipts afterwards will not be reimbursed.

It is important to note that all equipment and software remains the property of Syracuse University and must be returned in the event the faculty member leaves the university, for any reason. This is the case for equipment purchased under any funding source including internal and external grants or restricted funds.
