Includes strategies for planning library programs and services that are inclusive of the information needs of PK-12th grade students with disabilities.

Additional Course Description

The purpose of IST 564 is to increase the level of pre-service librarians’ understanding of the library and information needs of persons with disability, whether a function of age, impairment, or health condition, and with affirmative implications for serving persons of different language, cultural, religious, gender, or sexual identities that intersect with a disability or otherwise pose different ways of engaging and/or navigating the world. The course will provide context, awareness, and strategies that impact students' abilities to develop programs and services, provide facilities, and select resources and technologies to meet the diverse needs and ways of all patrons. The course is structured around five core project assignments that will assist you to develop practical tools and resources for your professional library career. They are

  • Library Observations & Reflections
  • Disability History/Social Model Presentation
  • Assistive Technology (AT) Report and Recommendations
  • Library Accessibility Evaluation
  • Final Project

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, students will be able to:

  1. Use disability history and the social model of disability to advocate for and recommend change in library policy or practice.
  2. Use federal disability law and standards to evaluate the accessibility of, and select accessible resources for, library programs, policies, and services.
  3. Apply a social justice lens to designing and presenting a model library program, policy, service, or resource that is inclusive of another marginalized identity.
  4. Use the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework to design and present a model library program, policy, service, or resource that meets the needs of diverse patrons.
  5. Professionally and effectively interact and communicate with patrons regardless of their different ways of engaging and/or navigating the world.
