Course Description

This 3 credit lab-focused course for graduate course will broaden and deepen your understanding of cloud management. Cloud computing offers great potential benefit to users, such as lower cost, greater flexibility and scalability, and the ability to focus on core expertise and less on managing complex infrastructure. This course will equip students with skills in cloud enterprise service creation and management, and technical and business knowledge required for assessing opportunities and risks of cloud services.The course focuses on developing skills to manage cloud instances through lab assignments in the simulated environment provided by top Cloud vendors in the market today. We note the course uses –cloud services –but some activities must be done in the students own accounts and machines. Conceptual themes will also be presented alongside technical aspects of cloud management.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, students will be able to:

  1. Build familiarity with key cloud concepts and terminology.
  2. Understand the economics of cloud computing in general.
  3. Understand privacy and security implications of cloud-based infrastructure.
  4. Interpret and analyze key factors to be considered before moving infrastructure to cloud environment.
  5. Identify the necessary security implementations needed for deploying cloud-service.
  6. Bring an economic and regulatory perspective to development of cloud-based service.
  7. Make strategic choices for cloud digital service creation and monetization across different platforms.
  8. Assess accurately how cloud management approaches, technology, policy and governance may affect human users, devices/other non-person entities, and individual organizations.
  9. Use capacity management tools to monitor the health of the services or applications.
  10. Design, configure, and manage cloud, hybrid, and on-premises based information services in digital enterprise environments. 
  11. Use services provided by vendors to host application in the cloud environment.
  12. Identify the optimal cloud service platform to host the application in order to minimize the cost and maximize the performance of the application.
