Grade Center: errorParsingDataMsg

Blackboard Learn Logo

Problem Description

There's an occasional problem with the Grade Center that stems from Blackboard somehow labeling two grade columns with the same ID value. The error message depends on the browser, but may look like this:

Internet Explorer:
errorParsingDataMsg
TypeError: 'this.scoreProvidersMap[...]' is null or not an object
Firefox:
errorParsingDataMsg
TypeError: this.scoreProvidersMap[spu.handle] is undefined
Google Chrome:
errorParsingDataMsg
TypeError: Cannot set property 'allowContentEdit' of undefined

Solution

Using Firefox, follow these steps (can only perform these steps using Mozilla Firefox):
  • Go to Full Grade Center
  • Click blue "Manage" button and choose "Column Organization"
  • Move one column up or down
  • Click Submit.
Manage Menu, Select Column Organization
Note: Clicking "Column Organization" won't work unless you are using Firefox. (In other browsers, you can right-click and copy the link in "Column Organization" and paste it into the address bar. But use Firefox, it's much easier with less steps.)
Reorder Columns and Submit
Log out of Blackboard and log back in, go to your grade center in the course where you were experiencing the error message and you should now see your full grade center once again. Re-ordering forces Blackboard to re-number the column ID values, and that error should disappear.
