Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in Latin America and the Caribbean (PLACA)

Students who complete 12 credits of coursework related to Latin America and the Caribbean can receive a Certificate of Advanced Study recognized by the State of New York.  For a course to be eligible for this Certificate, the Director of the Certificate Program, Professor Alicia Rios (abrios@syr.edu), must agree that it has at least 33 % Latin American and Caribbean content.

Obtaining The Certificate:  

Interested students are encouraged to contact the Director of the Certificate Program, Professor Alicia Rios (abrios@syr.edu), early in their tenure to develop a program of study.

In order to receive the certificate, students must complete 12 credit hours of coursework and earn a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 in these courses and successfully complete the degree program in their primary field.

Administrative Steps:

Once you are approved, please fill out the Graduate Enrollment Internal Admission Application form. Please note that the “Program Code” for this certificate is LA04C. Please send completed form to Eleanor Langford (evlangfo@syr.edu).

Please also remember that a Graduate Diploma Request Form must be completed through MySlice during the semester the student will graduate. Students must complete a separate form for each of their degree programs as each results in its own degree date and diploma.
