Power BI is now included with your Office 365 Pro Plus subscription. Power BI is a cloud-based business analytics service that gives you a single view of your most critical business data. Monitor the health of your business using a live dashboard, create rich interactive reports with Power BI Desktop and access your data on the go with native Power BI Mobile apps. It’s easy, fast, and free.
Using Power BI Web-based Client
Please use the following steps to use Power BI in your browser of choice.
Requires Activation
If you would like to use Power BI simply change your password on the NetID self-service page. Your account should be active at your next login. If you can not log in following your password change, contact the ITS Help Desk by emailing help@syr.edu, by phone at 315-443-2677, or by stopping into 1-227 CST.
1 - Open a Browser and Locate the Sign On page
Visit the PowerBI getting started page and click Sign in.
2 - Sign on Using your SU Email Account Credentials
Log in with your Office 365 ProPlus eligible account.
Can't Log In?
If you get the error message below, your account is not currently active. If you have not done so already, contact the ITS Help Desk to get your account activated. If you have been notified by ITS staff that the account is active, ensure that you are logging in with your Office 365 ProPlus eligible account. Your password is manageable on our NetID self-service page.
Downloading and Installing Power BI Desktop for Windows
Please use the following steps to download and install your copy of Power BI desktop. Note that you may need your Windows administrator password to install this software.
1 - Open a Browser and Locate the Download Page
Visit the PowerBI download page in your desired browser and click Download.
2 - Enter a Valid Email Address and Download the Installer
Enter your syr.edu email address and click Get started.
The installation file will now download to your default download location.
3 - Locate the Windows Installer File
In most cases the file will download to your browser's download location.
If you can not locate it within your browser, simply open your computer's downloads location viewable in your File Explorer (or My Computer in older Windows versions).
After locating the file double click to run the Windows installation.
4 - Proceed Through the Setup Wizard
On the initial window, click Next to proceed.
The next window requires you read the Microsoft software license terms. Check the box and click Next to proceed.
Next, you'll need to determine the installation location. Once determined click Next to proceed.
Determine if you'd like a desktop shortcut. Click Install to proceed. Note that you will need your computer's administrator password if you are not currently logged into an administrator account.
Congratulations! You've successfully installed Power BI Desktop.
