It is important to us that we correctly pronounce your name when it is called during our commencement ceremony.

To help us do so, please send a short recording of the pronunciation of your name, which we will reference when preparing for the ceremony.


We recommend using a recorder app on your phone, then sharing the recording with us.  Instructions for doing so are below.


Recordings should be sent to CommencementSubmit@syr.edu.  Please include the full spelling of your name in the subject line.

  • Launch the built-in Voice Memos app
  • Press record and state your name as you would like it to be pronounced
  • Press stop
  • Tap the three dots menu icon in the upper right corner
  • Choose Share, then your Outlook or Mail app
  • Change the subject to the full spelling of your name
  • Add the address CommencementSubmit@syr.edu to the To: field
  • Tap the arrow icon to send the message

  • Open a recorder app
    • We suggest Google's own Recorder app as seen in the video above, which can be downloaded for free from the Play Store
  • Press record and state your name as you would like it to be pronounced
  • Press pause, then Save
  • Tap the resulting recording, then tap the share icon in the menu bar
  • Choose to share as a file, click Next, and tap your email client to open a new message
  • Add the full spelling of your name to the subject field
  • Add the address CommencementSubmit@syr.edu to the To: field
  • Click send
