Changes to your Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) / Adding an Alternate Number
Two-factor authentication needs to have your most current information in order to be the most effective.
If you ever need to change these settings, for example, you have a new phone number or you wish to change your verification method please go to the Microsoft 2FA Management Page: http://msmfa.syr.edu/If you are traveling abroad and have 2 different phones: You can add a foreign phone number on the settings page (http://mfa.syr.edu/) under "alternate number", however you must do this before you begin your travel or start using the alternate number.
If you are traveling abroad but use the same phone, changing its number when traveling: The mobile app is highly recommended if you bring the same phone with you when traveling, however, you can choose to use the alternate number method as well.
To sign in with the alternate number, enter your email and password. Then when you see the 2FA prompt, click the link that reads "Sign in another way".
If you wait about 60 seconds and do not enter any 2FA information, Microsoft will redirect you to a screen that reads "We didn't hear from you" at the top. If this page appears, you can still sign in using an alternate phone number by clicking the link that reads "get a code a different way".

Overview
The Microsoft Authenticator app helps you sign in to your accounts when you're using two-step verification. Multifactor authentication helps you to use your accounts more securely because passwords can be forgotten, stolen, or compromised. Multifactor authentication uses a second step, like your smartphone, to make it harder for other people to break into your account.
Two-step verification: The standard verification method, where one of the factors is your password. After you sign in using your username and password, you can either approve a notification or enter a provided verification code.
Download and Install the App
Install the latest version of the Authenticator app, based on your operating system:
Google Android
- On your Android device, go to Google Play to download and install the Authenticator app.
Apple iOS
- On your Apple iOS device, go to the App Store to download and install the Authenticator app.

If you're not currently on your mobile device, you can still get the Authenticator app if you send yourself a download link from the Authenticator app page. |
Setting Up The Microsoft Authenticator App
Tip |
---|
First time app set up is made easier by having both a computer and your smartphone. You will need to scan a QR code from a screen with your phone. |
The first time you log into a syr.edu account, or after your authentication has been reset, you will be prompted to set up multifactor authentication:
- Follow the on screen prompts:
- When adding an account into the app, be sure to choose "Work or School"
- Scan the provided QR code with the app. Note: do not scan the QR below, it is a reference screenshot and will not properly set up your multifactor authentication.
- Approve the test notification sent to your device:
- Success!
