Preparing Exchange for SUMail

If you received an email indicating you need to configure your Exchange account in preparation for migration to SUMail, we recommend removing your account from the device and reconfiguring the account using the steps below. Configuring your email account with your full email address will properly prepare you for your account's migration. On macOS specifically, you may be required to perform this task AFTER your account is migrated.

Getting SUMail setup for Apple Mail

Steps shown below are using macOS 11.2 (Big Sur), your steps may vary visually depending on your operating system.

  1. Go to the Mail.app
    mail app

  2. In Mail, choose Mail > Add Account

  3. Select Microsoft Exchange

    select exchange account screen

  4. Enter your full SUMail email address (NetID@syr.edu)



  5.  Choose Sign In

    click sign in button

  6.  Add your SUMail (NetID) password

    Enter password prompt

  7.  If you are prompted for Two-Factor Authentication (2FA or MFA), follow the on screen prompts to receive verification, otherwise skip step

    approve the sign in request with the default methodapprove MFA 2FA with an alternate method

  8.  Once you're logged in, choose what you would like to sync and then press Done.

    Click done to finish setting up account

    Congratulations! Your SUMail is all set up!



Getting SUMail set up in Outlook for Mac

  1. Install Outlook

    The desktop Outlook app is available for students, faculty, and staff as part of Office365. You can install Outlook by logging in to http://portal.office.com/ using your SU email address and password. Once logged in, click on the "Install Office" button in the top-right corner. This a large file, so it may take some time to download and install. 

    Faculty and/or Staff provided computers

    If you are using an SU-provided computer, Outlook is likely already installed. If it is not installed, contact your academic or administrative IT support team.

  2. Launch Outlook

    Outlook can be launched from Finder by double-clicking the Microsoft Outlook icon in the Applications Folder, or by typing Microsoft Outlook in Spotlight at the top right of the screen, or by clicking on the Launchpad in the dock find the Microsoft Outlook icon and click it to launch it. 
  3. Add your SUMail account

    When launching Outlook for the first time you will be prompted to set up an account. Enter your full syr.edu email (NetID@syr.edu) and password on the next screen.  

    Already have an account in Outlook?

    If you already have an account set up in Outlook you will need to add an additional account. On the menu bar click Outlook > Preferences > Accounts  and hit the + button to add another account.

     If prompted, authenticate with two-factor. Once your have completed this steps you should see a confirmation message that your account has been added and you may begin using Outlook. 


    After following all on screen prompts, you will see the account has been added. 

Congratulations! Your SUMail is all set up!
