Preparing for Your Online Course, Participating in Your Live Sessions, and Getting Help
To make your online experience the best it can be, please use the information provided here to prepare for a successful course!
Use a Desktop or Laptop Computer: Your online course is best experienced using a desktop or laptop computer. We recommend that you plan to use one of these options for the duration of the course.
Check Your Browser: You will be using Blackboard as the primary means to access all your course materials. Firefox and Chrome are the recommended desktop OS browsers but are certainly not the only choices. To ensure your browser is supported, please check your computer system using the Blackboard Browser Checker.
Prepare for Using Zoom: All live sessions for this course are accessed using Zoom videoconferencing software. You can prepare for Zoom by taking these steps so that your live sessions go smoothly:
Test your connection. Join a test meeting here: https://zoom.us/test to check your internet connection, preview your camera, and test your microphone.
Activate your SU Zoom account. A Syracuse University Zoom account has been made for you. Those with personal Zoom accounts configured using an @syr.edu email address will be prompted to transition their personal Zoom account to their Syracuse University Zoom account. For a step-by-step guide to doing this before your live sessions, please visit this Answers page: https://su-jsm.atlassian.net/l/cp/oGxk6crm
Please Note: It is strongly recommended that you do not use your phone to connect, but if you do, you will be responsible for any charges that are incurred.
Prepare for Your Live Sessions: Use this checklist to ensure your live sessions are stress-free:
Find a space with the best internet connection. Consider your proximity to the connection, or use a wired connection if possible.
Reduce other traffic on your router during your live sessions (for example, other household members using streaming services).
Use a headset or headphones with a built-in microphone for the best audio quality.
Use a webcam or your device’s built-in camera for the best video quality.
Choose a quiet space with no disruptions so that you can focus on and participate freely in your live sessions.
Participating in Your Live Sessions
During the course, you will be required to participate in live sessions using Zoom. Please use the following steps to make the most of these live sessions.
If possible, join the session early to set up your audio/video and be ready to begin on time.
Connect to the Zoom live session by clicking the live class link in Blackboard to launch Zoom. If prompted, confirm that you wish to launch the Zoom app. Log in using your Zoom or SU credentials.
Be prepared to focus on your live session by reducing distractions:
It helps to close all other tabs, applications, and chats on your computer so that you are not distracted and can fully engage in your session.
It is also recommended that you place your mobile phone in another room so it is not visible.
Engage in your live session by participating in session discussions and activities by providing your questions, answers, or opinions.
Be professional and courteous. Listen to the presenter and respect the opinions of others. Avoid interrupting using the "Raise Your Hand" tool and express your thoughts professionally. If you need to speak privately to an instructor, message them individually (and not in a group chat).
