The primary role of the communications team is to tell the Maxwell story to internal and external audiences to promote recruitment, engagement and development efforts, and other key initiatives. We do that by sharing media mentions and faculty research, and with storytelling that spotlights faculty expertise, unique student experiences and alumni achievements. We maintain a variety of digital and print platforms, including the Maxwell School newsfeed, the Perspective alumni magazine (print and digital companion), and the schoolwide social media channels:
Facebook -- @Maxwell.School
LinkedIn -- @syracuse-university---maxwell-school
Instagram -- @maxwellschoolsu
X -- @MaxwellSU
Bluesky -- @maxwellsu.bsky.social
We welcome suggestions for news, feature stories and social media posts. If you have an item you would like our team to consider, please send an email to MaxComms@syr.edu. Provide as much information as possible in your email, answering the basic “who, what, when, why and where.” While we cannot cover every story we hear about, we will certainly consider your thoughts and ideas.
For Maxwell Students:
The Maxwell communications team tells interesting stories about student experiences and accomplishments, which are published in the school’s newsfeed and across social media channels.
Story topics include experiential learning, academic trips, study abroad internships and related extracurricular activities, like Model United Nations. If you would like to share your news with us, please reach out to MaxComms@syr.edu for consideration.
We are also looking for students willing to share their Maxwell experiences on social media. Reach out to share your ideas for Instagram takeovers or other ways to get involved. And please follow, like and tag us.
For Maxwell Faculty:
The Maxwell communications team shares information about faculty research and publications, media mentions and commentary.
Please reach out to MaxComms@syr.edu to tell us about the following for awareness and content planning:
An upcoming or recently published book
An upcoming or recently published journal article
New grant awards
New research findings
Other outcomes related to research
Reach out to us if you are planning a conference appearance, a scholarly trip, or if you have an experiential learning project for students coming up. We also encourage you to capture photos of these events and share them with us for possible consideration as content for the school’s website, social media channels or other school publications.
Our team works closely with the Syracuse University media relations team and can help faculty navigate media interactions.
We also search media sources for quotes and mentions of Maxwell faculty, as well as opportunities for faculty to contribute to the conversation.
Faculty should contact us via email at MaxComms@syr.edu if you:
Get a call from a reporter
Have an upcoming television or radio interview
Place an op-ed or need help editing one
Are quoted in the media, including television, radio, print or online sources
Aee a connection between your expertise or research and an issue in the news
For Maxwell Staff:
The communications team is here to support the many entities within the Maxwell School as we all work to share information about the accomplishments of our students, faculty, alumni and staff.
One of the great challenges for the team is knowing all that is going on at the school. Please make sure your events are added to the Maxwell public events calendar on the website and to the Maxwell events calendar in Outlook.
If you are hosting a major conference, a special guest speaker, or a particularly noteworthy event that you would like the communications team to consider for storytelling purposes, please reach out to MaxComms@syr.edu. Again, while it is hard to cover every event at the school, it is impossible to cover the ones we do not know about.
When your department, center or institute has an event, take pictures, share them on your social media channels, and tag Maxwell’s schoolwide social media accounts so we can consider sharing.
Website
The Maxwell communications team, working with our partners in ICT and web maintainers across the school, oversees the school’s digital footprint, which includes over 7000 pages. The school’s web maintainers should contact MaxComms@syr.edu with any questions, changes or edits.
Internal Communications
Communicating within the school is integral to the function of Maxwell. The primary means of internal communications for the dean’s office is the staff, student and faculty listservs. These listservs are reserved for communications of schoolwide importance, as determined by the deans. The Maxwell communications team does not manage or monitor these listservs. For questions, please contact maxwelldeansoffice@syr.edu.
Departments, centers and institutes also maintain listservs that are appropriate for their internal communications and event promotion.
The Maxwell Staff Council publishes and distributes a staff newsletter. Updates for consideration should be sent to msc@syr.edu.
In addition, Maxwell staff are encouraged to use established Teams channel chats and regular meetings to communicate internally.
Other questions and concerns can be sent to MaxComms@syr.edu.
Other resources:
Recording Studio
The Maxwell School has a small recording studio in the basement of Eggers Hall. Faculty interested in using the studio should contact MaxwellAV@syr.edu for more information.
Event Planning and Communications
Visit Maxwell School Event Planning for resources and instructions.
Photography Guidance
The Maxwell communications team does not have a photographer on staff and focuses its internal photography assets on supporting the school’s social media channels and website.
For event photography and headshots, we encourage departments, centers and institutes to contact one of the University’s preferred vendors, including Charles Wainwright and Amelia Beamish .
If your unit chooses to take photos of an event you are hosting, please see the guidelines provided by the University's Marketing and Communications Division and the Maxwell School Dean's Office: Maxwell School Photography Guidance.
Graphic Design
The Maxwell communications team does not have a graphic designer on staff and focuses its efforts on schoolwide events and high-profile initiatives, including the school’s magazine, undergraduate and graduate recruitment brochures, the Maxwell School outward facing website at http://maxwell.syr.edu , schoolwide social media channels, and other broad-based materials and channels.
If you need assistance with a design project, we recommend checking first to see if a template is available through either the school or the University's Answers pages. Commonly requested items include:
If you need additional assistance, we encourage you to reach out to MaxComms@syr.edu so we can advise on the best way to proceed with your project. The communications team and others throughout the school frequently work with Bob Wonders on signage and branded items.
