Question Creation with the AI Design Assistant

The AI Design Assistant can help instructors generate test questions for both formative and summative assessments based on simple subject prompts.

In your content area, hover your mouse where you want to add the test.  Click on the purple plus sign and select Create.  From the create item panel that opens, select test. The "create your assessment" window opens where you will:

  1. Select Auto-generate question from the test settings.

  2. You should now see the Auto-Generate Questions screen.

    1. Enter a description to narrow the focus of the question.  The more detailed the description, the more precise the questions generated should be.

    2. From the drop down menu select a question type.  You can select "Inspire me!" and the AI assistant will generate random question types.

    3. Adjust the complexity of the question and number of questions you would like generated by using the sliders.

    4. When finished, select Generate.

You will see the questions that were generated.  To use the question, select the box for the corresponding question and Select Add to Assessment

Once you have generated the test questions, you will have the opportunity to name the test and review each question for accuracy.  Edit questions and question points as desired.  Select the test settings gear icon to open and access the test options.

Another orange arrow points to the three dot ellipsis where a drop down menu is revealed. The edit option is highlighted on this drop down menu.

Generate Question Banks

The AI Design Assistant can also help you build a question bank (a database of test items that instructors can reuse).

  1. Select Question Banks on your Course Content page. This is located at the bottom of the right panel.

  1. On the Question Banks page, select the plus icon at the center of the purple horizontal line to reveal the drop down options. Select Auto-Generate.

  1. On the Auto-Generate Question Bank page, you will note the panel on the left of the page.

  • You can enter a description to narrow the focus of your questions

  • If you have existing course items that you want to add to your bank, click on the select course items button

  • You can adjust the complexity of the questions by sliding the bar from low to high

  • Use the Question Type menu to choose specific instructional items

  • Select the Advanced options to change the language of the instructional items

On the right of the page you will see a series of generated questions. Once you have made your custom modification on the left panel, select Generate, and the generated questions will be refreshed to match your modifications.

  1. Select the generated questions you want and then select Add to Question Bank. Once this action is done the Question Banks page will reappear with clear instructions to access your new generated bank. You will also see a list of your previous generated banks with the date and last edited time.
