Objective: To give an overview of classroom technology with basic troubleshooting steps.

2 types of spaces:

  • Registrar space - White Camera

  • Newhouse space - Logitech Camera

Difference between Registrar classroom and Newhouse spaces? Support.

  • Registrar spaces - Basic troubleshooting, then escalate to learning environments (Email help@syr.edu)

  • Newhouse Spaces - Newhouse IT team will support the classroom fully. (Email newhelp@syr.edu)

  • Exception - Mac Mini’s belong to Newhouse.


Show Basic Operation of the Rooms.

Newhouse spaces:

  1. Ensure the switcher is on (Power light on the right)

  2. Press the input that you need (PC, Mac, HDMI, Airplay etc)

  3. For PC and Mac - tap on the space bar of the respective keyboard. (Note: Mac Keyboard is white, PC keyboard is black)

  4. Check if the TV is on. If not, press the power button of the TV, or use the remotes in the room provided.

  5. Sound - sound input should be (INSERT PIC OF INPUT PC/MAC) and volume control using the remotes provided.

  6. Show USB location. (As much as possible to use OneDrive)

If there is a PC and Mac in the classroom, remember to use the PC to use the Zoom camera and Microphones! HDMI does not support zoom.


How to use Airplay:

Any Macbook/iPhone are able to use Airplay to mirror display or present audio/video.
How to Steps:

  1. Ensure AirOrangeX wireless network is connected. (Verify by going to any websites and it loads)

  2. On the Macbook:

    Click on Control Centre from the menu bar on the upper right.

  4. Click "Screen Mirroring".

  5. Then, select the Apple TV or the name of your TV from the classroom list.

  7. After selecting, enter the code displayed on the screen. You’re all set.

To cancel screen share:

  1. Follow step 2 again, and select the Blue highlighted classroom to disconnect.

Problem with AirPlay:

  1. No code shown when pressing Airplay on the phone/laptop - email to newhelp@syr.edu - Airplay not displaying code in Room (xyz) please restart.

  2. No classrooms being displayed in step 6 - check if the network is connected. If not, disconnect and reconnect the network (AirOrangeX) and try again.


After class is over:

  1. Ensure you are logged out of all teaching station. (PC, Mac)

  2. If you are the last class, you can shutdown the room.

    1. Registrar space hit turn off on the touchscreen.

    2. Newhouse space just turn off the TV.

Note: If you are not logged out, the other user will not be able to login and your files/information will be left open! Do not forget to logout!


Tips and Tricks:

  1. Goto the classrooms prior to class starts and try using the room as how you would present in class to get a “feel” of the space.

  2. Mess around, try out playing a video via youtube, change volume input if there is no sound, do a test zoom call.

  3. Escalate early if you see something is wrong. Email to newhelp@syr.edu

  4. Attend Classroom Technology trainings (Twice a year, January and August)

Example: Unable to project to the screen, issue with typing/clicking. No sound from the teaching station PC/Mac.
What has been done: Example: restarted computer, plug - unplug connections.

Do not run to our office to look for support. We are ticket based support system and might not be in the office when you are at our door. Put in a ticket for quicker response.
