Approved formats for creating NSF biographical sketches are (1) SciENcv and (2) NSF Fillable PDF.
SciENcv
NSF has partnered with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to use SciENcv: Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae as an NSF-approved format for use in preparation of the biographical sketch section of an NSF proposal. Adoption of a single, common researcher profile system for Federal grants reduces administrative burden for researchers.
- SciENcv will produce an NSF-compliant PDF version of the biographical sketch.
- Proposers must save these documents and submit them as part of their proposals via FastLane or Research.gov.

NSF Fillable PDF
- NSF Fillable PDF - (Revised May 1, 2020) NSF is providing a fillable PDF for use in preparation of the biographical sketch. Proposers will be able to download it from this page, complete the form, and upload it as part of their proposal via FastLane, Research.gov or Grants.gov.
The National Science Foundation has designated the National Institutes of Health’s SciENcv (Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae) as an NSF-approved format for submission of biographical sketch(es) and is encouraging its use to prepare a biographical sketch for inclusion in proposals to NSF.
- SciENcv allows the researcher to quickly create and maintain their NSF Biographical Sketch and to integrate publications and other profile information from ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier).
- Subject Librarians are available to assist Syracuse University researchers, faculty, and staff with setting up and managing ORCID profiles.
- Training resources are available on the SciENcv website.
Alternatively, NSF has released a fillable PDF:
- Proposers can download the form from NSF’s Biographical Sketch page, complete the form, and upload it as part of their proposal via FastLane/Research.gov.
