This page provides information regarding IT resources available to the various primary affiliations that are held by former active users at Syracuse University after graduation, retirement, resignation, etc. Below is information to assist in determining which inactive affiliation category a former active user falls into and which IT resources are available and for how long. 

Users retaining resource access should note that many of the IT resources below require login with an active NetID and password. Users can manage their credentials on the NetID self-service page.

Alumni and Student Inactive

Alumni affiliation is assigned to former active students who have a graduated and completed a program of study at Syracuse University. This change typically occurs within 3 months of completion of the program of study.

Student Inactive affiliation is assigned to former SU and ESF active students that have discontinued their program of study and do not also have another completed or active program of study. This change from Active to Inactive occurs within 30 days to 2 years of the last academic term dictating by the school or college.

ESF Alumni are assigned Student Inactive affiliation. 

Former SUPA students are assigned the student inactive affiliation within 30 days of last academic term.

Former students retain access to IT resources for 12 months after the last term of attendance including but not limited to:

  • email
  • O365
  • MySlice
  • BlackBoard

Adobe - Access to the Adobe Creative Cloud suite and its licensing ends after graduation or leaving the University. Cloud based assets and on-campus access to Adobe Spark for Higher Education, will expire after 12 months.

Google Workspace - Access to the Google Workspace for Education and use of the g.syr.edu for access and authorization to additional Google Services ends after graduation or leaving the University. Students will have a period of time of 90 days which begins at the end of last academic term date.  Before the 90 days pass, users can use Google's migration tool, Google Takeout, to migrate their data. This process is recommended by Google.

Printing - While former students can log into lab machines for a period of time, the printing accounts they had as active users are no longer usable. A guest print account will be needed to print. Instructions to create the account can be found on the Guest Printing page.

RDS - Access to the Remote Desktop Service (RDS) is removed when your affiliation is Alumni or Inactive. 

Zoom - Former students will maintain their Syracuse University Zoom account until 12 months after the last term of attendance; however the account will transition to a Basic level account and will no longer have the benefits of a Zoom Edu Pro license.

Faculty/Staff Inactive and Staff Retired

ESF Employee Inactive and Retired

Staff Inactive affiliation is assigned the day after the job end date, as determined by Human Resources, by former SU staff who leave the University for any reason, including resignation or retirement.

Faculty Inactive affiliation is assigned the day after the job end date, as determined by Human Resources, by former SU faculty who leave the University for any reason but have not retired

ESF Employee Inactive and Retired affiliations fall under these access rules. 

Former SU staff or ESF employees and faculty who have retired or left the University and SU faculty who have not retired lose access to IT resources, including email, the day after their last recorded day of work


No exceptions. Former staff who have retired or left the University and former faculty who have not retired are unable to authenticate to IT resources after leaving the University.
Faculty Retired

Faculty Retired affiliation is assigned to former SU faculty who have retired, including Emeritus faculty.

Retired SU faculty maintain access to many IT related resources unless noted. 

Faculty retired email access is maintained through yearly password change requirements. 

Access to the H: Drive will be retained as of now, as well as when migrated to OneDrive. Yearly password changes are also required for this access.

Note: Access to some resources, such as Adobe and Blackboard, are based upon the user having previous access as an active faculty member.

Google Workspace - Access to the Google Workspace for Education and use of the g.syr.edu for access and authorization to additional Google Services ends upon retiring from the University.

Zoom - Retired faculty will maintain their Syracuse University Zoom account, however, the account will be moved to a 'Basic' level account. The Zoom Basic account will no longer have the benefits of a Zoom Edu Pro license.
