If you have requested that a Virtual Machine be created for your research computing needs, you will need a couple bits of information to access it:
- Your NetID and password
- Your VM's hostname (this should be given to you by your Technology Support representative)
- A Connection to SU's Network
- Are you on campus? If yes, good! You're ready to start connecting.
- Are you off-campus?
- If yes, are you using a campus-managed computer configured for DirectAccess? If yes, good! You're ready to start connecting.
- If no, you need a copy of the SU VPN installed on your computer.
Optional:
- If you're using a Mac, you will need the Microsoft Remote Desktop client for Mac.
- If you're using an iPad or iPad Pro, you'll need the assistance of your Tech Support representative.

If you're on campus, or are off-campus using a campus-managed laptop configured with DirectAccess, you can skip this step.
Windows
Download the SURA (the SU VPN tool) for Windows
Double click to run the file you downloaded, and log in with your SU NetID credentials. When you're connected you should see a dialog that looks like this:
When you see that, find the field for Remote Desktop (it's near the middle of the window)
In the field titled "Computer", type the hostname of your virtual machine (this would be given to you by your tech-support representative.
Click the button that says "Connect".
You should be logged in to your VM - it would look just like you've logged into any campus computer.
