Audience

This course is intended for MSLIS or MA in Museum Studies students who have an interest in archives and/or working with manuscript collections.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, students will be able to: 

  1. Appraise archival materials for their enduring value, and be aware of best practices for documenting acquisitions and accessions. 

  2. Arrange materials according to archival principles, while preserving context among records organized into hierarchical levels. 

  3.  Demonstrate an ability to manage the distinctions between physical and intellectual control of archival materials.

  4. Comprehend the role arrangement and description play in discovery of, and access to archival materials.

  5.  Understand best practices for long-term storage of a variety of archival materials in appropriate containers and environments.
