Unfortunately Microsoft at this time only has Power BI for use on Windows devices. If you are a Mac user and need to use Power BI we would suggest either using the web-based client, an on campus lab computer, or Remote Desktop Services (RDS)

Faculty and staff should reach out to their academic or administrative support personnel.


Using Power BI Web-based Client

Please use the following steps to use Power BI in your browser of choice.

1 - Open a Browser and Locate the Sign On page

Visit the PowerBI getting started Visit  Microsoft's "PowerBI - How to Get Started" page and click "Sign in" at the top right of the page.

2 - Sign on Using your SU Email Account Credentials

Log in with your Office 365 ProPlus eligible University SUmail account.

3 - Web Platform

Once logged in you should see the Power Bi web platform and you should be able to start using it:

Can't Log In?

If you get the error message below, ensure that you are logging in with your Office 365 ProPlus eligible account. To ensure your account is active please change your NetID password on the NetID self-service page. This will activate your account for Power BI access in the event it was not previously active. Once your password is changed your account should be active at your next login.

Downloading and Installing Power BI Desktop for Windows

Please use the following steps to download and install your copy of Power BI desktop. Note that you may need your Windows administrator password to install this software.

1 - Open a Browser and

locate the Sign On page

Visit the PowerBI download Microsoft's "PowerBI - How to Get Started" page in your desired browser and click Downloadsign in at the top right.

Enter your syr.edu email address and click Get started.

The installation file will now download to your default download location.

3 - Locate the Windows Installer File

In most cases the file will download to your browser's download location.

If you can not locate it within your browser, simply open your computer's downloads location viewable in your File Explorer (or My Computer in older Windows versions).

After locating the file double click to run the Windows installation.

4 - Proceed Through the Setup Wizard

On the initial window, click Next to proceed.

The next window requires you read the Microsoft software license terms. Check the box and click Next to proceed.

Next, you'll need to determine the installation location. Once determined click Next to proceed.

Determine if you'd like a desktop shortcut. Click Install to proceed. Note that you will need your computer's administrator password if you are not currently logged into an administrator account.
