Question Creation with the AI Design Assistant

The AI Design Assistant can help instructors generate test questions for both formative and summative assessments based on simple subject prompts.


  1. On your Course Content page, hover on the line and click the the purple plus sign and select Create.

  1. On the Create Item panel scroll down to Assessment and select Test.

  1. On the New Test page (see top image on the right), click on the plus sign and select Auto-generate question.

  1. After clicking Auto-generate question, the Auto-Generate Questions page should appear (see bottom image on the right). The left side of the page presents you with the ability to:

  • Enter a description of what you would like the questions to be

  • Use the select course items button to access and select past materials/content

  • Select the Question Type such as essay, fill in the blank etc

  • Slide the bar from low to high to adjust the level of complexity for the generated question outputs

  • Select the Number of questions

  • Change the language of the generated question outputs by clicking the Advanced options

  1. Select the Generate button when you have completed your modifications.

  2. On the right of the page you will see several generated questions, select the ones you need and then click the Add to Assessment button (see image on the right).

Once you have generated the test questions, you will have the opportunity to rename the default test title (New Test) and review each question for accuracy.  To do this, hover around the New Test title and select the edit icon when it appears. Edit questions and question points as desired by selecting the ellipsis (see image below). Select the Assessment Settings gear icon to modify the assessment settings. Generate Question Banks

The AI Design Assistant can also help you build a question bank (a database of test items that instructors can reuse).

  1. Select Question Banks on your Course Content page. This is located at the bottom of the right panel.

  1. On the Question Banks page, select the plus icon at the center of the purple horizontal line to reveal the drop down options. Select Auto-Generate.

  1. On the Auto-Generate Question Bank page, you will note the panel on the left of the page.

  • You can enter a description to narrow the focus of your questions

  • If you have existing course items that you want to add to your bank, click on the select course items button

  • You can adjust the complexity of the questions by sliding the bar from low to high

  • Use the Question Type menu to choose specific instructional items

  • Select the Advanced options to change the language of the instructional items

On the right of the page you will see a series of generated questions. Once you have made your custom modification on the left panel, select Generate, and the generated questions will be refreshed to match your modifications.

  1. Select the generated questions you want and then select Add to Question Bank. Once this action is done the Question Banks page will reappear with clear instructions to access your new generated bank. You will also see a list of your previous generated banks with the date and last edited time.
