Instructions to Create Assignments Using AI Design Assistant

The AI Design Assistant can help instructors formulate assignments for their courses. The following provide brief instructions to generate assignment outputs in Blackboard.


Step 1

On your Course Content page hover the grey line and click on the purple line to reveal the drop down menu. Then select Create.

Step 2

The Create Item dialog box will appear with a list of items. Look for the Assessment sub-section and select Assignment (noted by orange arrow in the image below).

Step 3

Select theAuto-generate assignmentbutton (noted by the orange arrow). This buttons stands out as a black button on the right hand side of the New Assignment title. 

Step 4

The left side of Auto-Generate Assignment page presents you with the ability to:

  • Enter a description of what you would like the assignment to be

  • Use the select course items button to access and select past assignments

  • To select your Desired cognitive level: apply, analyze, evaluate or create. These indicate the level of instructions for the generated assignment outputs

  • Slide the bar from low to high to adjust the level of complexity for the generated assignment outputs

  • Change the language of the generated assignment outputs by clicking on the Advanced options

Once you have make your custom modifications, you can select Generate.

Step 5

The right side of the Auto-Generate Assignment page provides the generated assignment instructions. Select the ONE output you need then click Add.


Edit and Adding Settings

The results of clicking the Add button will lead to your assignment with its respective title. You can edit the generated assignment instructions at this stage. You can also edit the title of the assignment.

The Assignment Settings are located on the right-side of the Assignment Content page. Click on the gear wheel icon to access setting features. Some key assignment settings areas include:

  • setting the due date and the amount of submission attempts

  • setting the form of grade system (points, percentage, complete/incomplete, SU letter)

  • setting the maximum points 

  • deciding to automatically post grade

Remember to click the Save button to save all changes made. 

To add another assignment content item you can click the auto-generate button

Step 3

The Create Item dialog box will appear with a list of items. Look for the Assessment sub-section and select Assignment (noted by orange arrow in the image below).

Step 4 

Select the Auto

Step 5

Once you click the Auto-generate Assignment button you will see the Auto-Generate Assignment page where you add both a Description box and select from a drop-down menu a list of Desired Cognitive Level. You can add a brief description of what you would like your assignment to be. The Desired Cognitive Level includes a couple higher-order thinking skills from Bloomberg's taxonomy. You may select the Inspire me! default button if you want to explore other possible assignment ideas.  You may adjust the Complexity bar to determine the level of assignment you wish to create, and you can click on the check box if you would like to generate an Assignment Title. Once you have included your prompts, select the Generate button.

Results Example

Step 5 notes the prompt areas where you enter/manipulate your prompts on the left side of the page. The right side of the page generates assignment ideas for your perusal. You may wish to select an option that is generated, and then click the Add button (located on the lower right-side of the generated content).

Adding Settings 

Once you have selected and/or modify your assignment, you may want to make some changes to settings relating to the assignment. The Assignment Settings are located on the right-side of the Assignment Content page. Click on the gear wheel icon Image Removed to access setting features. Some key assignment settings areas include:

  • setting the due date and the amount of submission attempts

  • setting the form of grade system (points, percentage, complete/incomplete, SU letter)

  • setting the maximum points 

  • deciding to automatically post grade

Remember to click the Save button to save all changes made.

Assessment Results 

The Assessment Results section within the Assignment Settings can also be manipulated. However, modification can only be made on the following once you add auto-generated questions:

  • Submission view

  • Automatic question feedback 

  • Question scores

  • Correct answers 

You can also add an access score, add time limit, add a grading rubric and assign groups.

All AI-generated information is opened to inaccuracy and bias. Your role as the expert and instructor of the course is to check and examine all content generated by the AI Design Assistant to ensure that information provided for learners is clear, accurate, and without bias.
